Parallel Rails

I rolled a firm green grape across the kitchen island, watching it wobble off course against a seam in the marble. A flat surface deserved a true trajectory. I retrieved two square bamboo chopsticks and laid them parallel, spacing them just wide enough to cradle the curve of the fruit. I elevated the top ends onto the edge of a slate coaster and aligned a small ceramic pinch bowl at the foot of the slope. One measured tap from my finger sent the grape gliding smoothly down the twin tracks, dropping into the bowl with a crisp, resonant clink. It stayed right in the center.
