The Coiled Green Serpent
Beyond the fallen brick path, a thick green creature lay tightly coiled beside the outdoor tap. Motionless. Waiting. I marched forward with steady strides! No creeping. I lunged headfirst and drove my horned brow straight into its ribbed flank—THUNK! The coiled rubber gave way with a spongy bounce, shuddering across the metal spindle without toppling. Grrr! It didn't strike back, but it held its ground against my charge. I planted my hind claws into the damp soil, gripped the tough ribbed hose between my jaws, and gave a sharp, resonant tug. The coil creaked, shifting half a turn. Stalemate, for now!
