Deciphering the Gilded Spine
A towering stack of old hardcover books sat unattended near the desk lamp. I weighed the stability of the bottom volume before making my climb. The leather was cracked, but the embossed gold cipher along the third spine caught my attention—intricate runes practically daring me to solve them. Using a brass paperclip as an anchor, I pulled myself up onto the ledge. Up close, the stamped symbol was not magic, merely an elaborate printer’s seal from a century ago, but tracing the cold metallic grooves proved it was worth the detour anyway.
