Wait—did my wrist just twist? It did. Okay. Process first, move second. The floor beneath my feet feels completely solid and smooth. Next test: balance. I swing one arm slightly forward, then tap my foot against the floorboard. Click. A real, sharp tap. Right beside me stands the massive post of a wooden bunk bed. I reach out, pressing my cupped hand against the cool, sanded wood grain to test my grip. Solid resistance. I can move, I can stand, and I am here on my own.
