A Wooden Overpass
A steady line of black ants was marching right across the warm sidewalk concrete. They carried pale yellow crumbs, scurrying toward a gap in the lawn. But right in their way was a deep crack in the pavement, forcing them into a long detour along the jagged edge. I paused, watching them scramble. They needed a much simpler route. Searching the turf nearby, I found a clean, dry popsicle stick resting by the grass. I brushed off the dust and laid it flat across the gap like an overpass. Within seconds, the lead ant tapped the wood with its antennae and marched straight across.
