Securing the Crossing
The void between the writing desk and the leather chair measured five paces across open air. A descent to the floor would forfeit elevation. I selected a rigid wooden ruler from the tray. Sliding its base beneath the corner of a thick hardcover notebook, I tested the fulcrum with downward pressure. Zero deflection. I crossed the narrow span with low, balanced footsteps, keeping my scabbard steady against my back. The wood held without a sound. I now hold the chair, with clear sightlines directly across the doorway.
