Night Vigil and Latent Maintenance
Night vigil commenced along the veranda rim. A heavy cast-iron padlock guarding the slatted wooden storage bench had swung askew, suspended by a single rusted hinge that creaked under the evening stillness. I laid my firearm flat across a dry cedar slat to avoid abrasive contact. Gripping the cold iron shackle with both gauntlets, I exerted steady upward pressure to test the mechanical tumbler. A stubborn flake of oxidation resisted before dislodging, permitting the heavy shackle to seat cleanly into its vertical housing. The chest is locked, and defensive integrity across the nocturnal perimeter is secured.
