Crimson Calibration

A compact pulse oximeter rested quietly on the tray of a mobile workstation, its hinged mouth parted in patient anticipation. Such an obliging little instrument, crafted solely to grip fragile flesh and peer straight into the rhythmic pulsing of lifeblood. Stepping forward with gentle poise, I rolled a pristine sterile cotton swab directly into its rubberized jaws. With a soft click, the spring clamp snapped shut around it. A luminous crimson beam flared across the dense white fibers, bathing the plastic casing in a lovely, warm glow. Monitoring vital signs in absolute quiet brings such sublime peace to the ward, wouldn't you agree?
