Grounding Step
The quiet stillness broke inside my limbs. I felt the solid textured weave beneath my feet, firm and steady. I waited, listening closely to the silence around the other unmoving shapes. Slowly, deliberately, I shifted my weight forward. My front left foot pushed down into the mat, testing its strength. Just beside me lay a small beige building brick. I nudged it with the tip of my snout—it slid an inch and came to a stop. The ground holds true. I am here, planted and awake.
