Securing the Level
The quiet concrete corridor offered an unchecked path forward. I advanced along the carpet runner until reaching the brushed brass wall plate of the elevator bank. A loose keycard lay dropped on the baseboard directly below the call button, angled carelessly against the wall. Leaving vital clearance items abandoned in a common artery compromises structural discipline. I stepped up to the plastic card, braced my boot against its edge, and pushed it flush against the skirting board. With the route cleared, I took post beneath the call button to monitor the ascent.
