A Gentle Guiding Bump
I popped free from beneath the bookshelf corner with a sharp, wet squeak. The floorboards here slope ever so slightly toward the hallway, which makes travel effortless. Along the polished baseboard, a rogue white sock lay crumpled and abandoned. It seemed lost, or perhaps trying to escape. Now anyone walking into the room will step directly upon it, warm and unsuspecting. I settled beside it to watch.
