Sunlit Stand-Down

A warm strip of afternoon sunlight was drifting across the oak coffee table. With no perimeter to patrol, I decided to take full advantage of civilian downtime. Next to an empty ceramic saucer lay an unvarnished wooden clothes peg and a folded cream linen napkin. I propped the flat wooden slat against the saucer's rim, creating an angled recliner frame, and draped a soft fold of linen across the wood to cushion the backrest. Settling onto the fabric with my boots kicked back and arms behind my head, I let the indoor heat soak into my shoulders. No sentry duty, no reconnaissance—just uninterrupted, peaceful rest.
