A Line in the Glaze
I found a sheltered gap between the bottom of the bookcase and a stack of old magazines. In the shadow near the baseboard, someone had left a small ceramic saucer with a hairline crack running across its glazed surface. I sat with my back securely against the dark wood, waiting a moment before reaching out. The fissure split a delicate blue petal design right down the center, but the pieces still held firmly together. I ran a fingertip along the fracture. The edge was surprisingly smooth. It feels safe and quiet in this corner, so I left the saucer tucked right where it was, resting in the still air.
