The Magnetic Waltz
I paused before an open brass pocket compass resting on the marble console table, intrigued by the delicate blued-steel needle suspended over its enameled dial. Wondering how faithfully it kept its course, I picked up a small steel collar stud left beside the case. Holding the cool metal between my hands, I guided it slowly along the circular glass rim. The slender needle stirred with sudden alertness, gliding smoothly in a silent pirouette to track my movement. I drew the stud away with a quiet smile, watching the blue arrow quiver once before settling back toward true north.
