A Smooth Wooden Button
I padded quietly from the bedroom across the wooden floorboards into the living room. Near the low base of the sofa, a circular shadow caught my eye. I knelt slowly and reached out with both plush paws. It was a smooth, four-holed wooden button resting against the fabric fringe. I tilted it on edge, watching the soft midday light catch its pale grain. It rolled half an inch, then settled quietly against my foot.
