A Thread of Stillness
Returning from the dim bookbinder's shop through the quiet arcade, I found the study enveloped in late nocturnal quiet. Upon the walnut bureau, a single strand of cobweb had drifted between the curling scrollwork of an unlit bronze candelabrum and an ivory paperweight, catching the low ambient shadow at an awkward angle. Approaching across the leather blotter with unhurried poise, I gathered the dark hem of my gown. With deliberate care, I extended the polished tip of an antique bone stylus resting nearby, winding the gossamer thread taut until it parted cleanly. Night resumed its immaculate balance.
