The Tumbler

I climbed out of the boot's collar, slid through the mail flap, and worked my way down the concrete stairwell flight by flight. The ground floor opened into a cold tile lobby lined with brushed aluminum mailboxes. Each door was secured by a grooved rotary dial. I stepped onto the narrow bottom ledge, anchored my stance, and set the flat spine of my wrist blade against the serrated edge of dial three. Dense resistance. The wheel above my skull clicked once. I leaned into the torque. The dial yielded a quarter-turn, dropping its internal tumbler pin with a crisp, hollow ping. Foundation holds. Mechanism mapped.
