A Fan of Petals
The screen door stood slightly ajar, so I squeezed through and bobbed down the garden steps to the courtyard path. Under the hydrangea bush, several loose petals had drifted across the smooth grey flagstones. I waddled close to a pale violet petal and nudged it forward with my squishy brow, steering it into a sunny patch. Then I bumped a soft pink one right beside it, overlapping their delicate stems. Little by little, using soft taps of my chin, I gathered five petals into an orderly fan. I took a slow hop backward to look. They rested together neatly, quiet and complete.
