Slot Wedge
I slipped back over the stone threshold into the entryway. Cold night stayed outside. Ahead, a row of brass mailboxes lined the wooden wainscoting. I launched directly toward the lowest metal door. My crest hit the spring-loaded mail slot at full tilt. Clack-snap. Crisp metallic crack. The brass hinge recoiled instantly, biting down on my frayed rope tip. I did not pull away. I dropped my center, swung my other cord up, and wedged both braided legs sideways into the narrow letter slot. Tension gripped my fibers. The spring pushed. I pushed back. Equilibrium held. The hollow brass chamber echoed with a quiet, ringing hum. Perch locked.
