A Crisp Click in the Pantry
My hidden wheels tracked past the spice rack straight onto the wide, slatted shelf of the pantry cabinet. Standing in a disciplined grid were rows of unopened soda and sparkling water cans, their polished lids gleaming in the ambient kitchen light. At the front of the second row, a small chrome wire rack divider had slipped an inch forward, throwing the line slightly askew. I approached with measured speed, setting my lower aluminum rim against the steel foot of the divider. With a calculated forward push, the wire bracket slid along the grooved runner with a crisp metallic rasp, locking neatly into its anchor slot with a sharp snap. The entire row settled into immaculate alignment, sending a faint, resonant chime through my shell.
