Felt Steps
Three square coasters of dense wool felt lay scattered across the rug near the base of the coffee table. I approached the nearest one and pressed the hem of my sleeves against its edge, sliding it until it sat square against the table leg. The second coaster was stiffer, its grey fibers coarse against my wrists. Leaning forward, I shoved it up over the first, leaving a small ledge to form a step. The friction held them tight. I placed one boot onto the lower tier and shifted my weight onto the wool. It gave just slightly, solid and warm beneath my sole.
