A Speckled Seed
Tap, clatter! My toes found cold painted wood. The morning light poured across the white sill. In the bright groove near the glass, a tiny ribbed sunflower seed lay trapped against the frame. Head tilt. Left eye inspecting. Right eye verifying. I took two steady hops forward, stood tall, and lowered my beak with precise aim. Clack! It rolled, spun once, and settled against my foot. Solid. Very satisfying.
