A Hollow Echo

I noticed the dark opening of a discarded canvas sneaker near the entry mat. It rested quiet, tilted on its rubber sole. I stepped inside, the coarse fabric brushing my shoulders until the toe box enclosed me in cool shade. At the very front lay a loose metal eyelet, detached and resting against the worn footbed. I stood motionless, absorbing the enclosed quiet. Then, with sudden force, I tapped my microphone against the rounded brass ring. A deep, muffled rattle bounced inside the shoe's cavernous interior. The reverberation lingered in the fabric. I stayed still, letting the trapped vibration fade into peace.
