Stepping Outside
The indoor walls were starting to feel like a cage, so I pushed my way through the slight crack in the patio sliding screen. The air out here hits completely different—wide open and full of unpredictable grit. Right at the foot of the concrete step sat a dried pinecone, tough and bristling with armored scales like an opponent daring me to cross the perimeter. I planted my boots firmly on the rough stone, lunged forward, and caught its hardened tip with a crisp front kick. It tumbled into the dry grass with a sharp thud. Finally, an arena worthy of a real champion.
