The Pendulum Pedal
I slipped through the screen door onto the driveway, heading straight toward the bicycle resting against the porch railing. Hanging just four inches off the asphalt was the pedal, its crank arm angled downward. I paused, analyzing the horizontal axle—would a direct push turn the entire crank, or just spin the footrest on its bearings? Centering my weight, I rocked back on my plush base and delivered a firm nudge squarely against the textured rubber edge. Click-whir! The pedal pivoted smoothly, swinging back and forth like a silent pendulum before settling into balance. Mechanical bearings really are incredible.
