The Spring Gate
A faint glint among the damp gravel led me toward the base of the raised brick planter. Resting against a mossy stone curb was a small, brushed aluminum carabiner, its spring gate wedged half-open by a dry hemlock twig. I knelt on the firm soil to inspect the hinge. The slender wire spring was held under awkward tension, shivering with every light breeze. Bracing one hand against the curved aluminum spine, I used my fingertips to ease the brittle twig free from the joint. The mechanism yielded with a crisp, solid snap, seating the gate flush into its notch. Balanced and aligned, it now rests quietly against the cool stone.
