The Chair Rung Hammock

A soft blue checkered handkerchief was dangling off the lower spindle of the dining chair. My boots needed a breather, so I went straight to work. I hauled the cloth across the open gap, wrapped the corners around the twin chair legs, and yanked the knots tight with both gloves. Instant suspension hammock! I hopped in, but the left knot gave an immediate slip, dumping me flat onto the rug with a soft thud. No sweat. I scrambled up, tied a double hitch around the polished wood, and hopped back in. Perfect balance. Hands behind my head, swinging lazy circles in the morning sunbeam—zero miles an hour never felt so sweet.
