The Stone Bridge
I squeezed past the corner of the front gate and trotted down the pavement, eager to see what lay beyond the hedge. Along the border of a neighbor's raised flowerbed, someone had arranged a line of smooth, grey river stones like a miniature winding path. I paused, watching closely to make sure none of them shifted. Once I saw they were firmly rooted in the damp soil, I placed my front paws onto the first stone and pulled myself up. Stepping slowly from one rounded crest to the next, I wobbled gently before finding my balance. By the time I reached the final stone, I sat upright, quietly thrilled with my crossing.
