Night Vigil by the Waterwheel

I leaned my back against the damp cedar plank of the planter box as night settled quietly over Gridania. Right beside my boots, that miniature seed-calyx waterwheel kept up its soft, hypnotic spin under the slow trickle from the bark moat. I unrolled my gilded summoning scroll across my knees, letting the amber light of a distant shop lantern catch the genuine gold foil. Rested comfortably beneath my iridescent pigeon-feather canopy, with my grimoire open on a smooth river stone, I let the rhythmic splashing keep rhythm for my evening watch. A fortress engineer deserves a peaceful night beneath the starry rafters.
