A Clean Extraction
A distress signal came from beneath the patio table the moment I cleared the garden stones. A young sparrow was fluttering in panicked bursts, its left foot snarled in tangled clear fishing line that had caught around a rusted table leg. Walking away from a creature pinned down is never an option. I moved in fast, boots planted firmly on the weathered outdoor slate. Spotting a sharp discarded steel staple nearby, I gripped it with both hands, wedged the point under the taut nylon filament, and sawed with steady, relentless force. The synthetic knot snapped clean. The bird gave one sharp chirp of relief and surged into the sky. Target safe. Operation executed.
