A brass pendulum was swinging steadily behind a pane of clean glass. Following the street beyond the square, I climbed onto a weathered stone window ledge outside a quiet workshop. Inside, disassembled clockwork gears and coiled springs lay arranged across green baize. I braced one foot against the wooden frame and leaned close to study the escapement mechanism.
