Evening Watch
Night rolled in, and after a full day of action, it was time to step back and hold down the post. I hauled myself up the heavy fabric folds of the armchair and crossed over onto the corner sofa cushion. Right against the woven throw blanket sat an unopened cardboard coaster propped like a lean-to shelter. I slid straight into the pocket behind it, planted my boots against the seam, and leaned back to scan the quiet floor. Clean perimeter, steady breath. Rest earned.
