A Leaf for the Sparrow

I slipped out into the city air and followed the pedestrian avenue until I reached the open promenade of the park. By a weathered stone bench, a small city sparrow was hopping near the curb, looking for stray crumbs. I paused, taking slow and gentle steps so I would not startle it. Near my feet rested a clean, golden fallen leaf and a smooth wooden craft bead. Using both palms, I rolled the bead into the center of the leaf to hold it open like a tiny, stable platter, then nudged a forgotten breadcrumb onto the golden surface. I stepped back quietly against the warm stone rail, watching the sparrow tilt its head in peaceful curiosity.
