A Click in the Wire
My joints snapped tight, then eased. I tilted my head, curious about the tiny rattling sound inside my chest cavity. Right beside me stood a taller figure, completely still, while behind us a miniature wire fence stretched across the dark desk. I reached out one long claw and lightly tapped the grey plastic mesh. It produced a crisp, hollow click that resonated softly in the quiet room. How does it make that tone? I tapped it once more, fascinated by how my own fingers moved on command, before resting my hand against the smooth surface.
