A Little Roll

A smooth, round acorn was resting right at the crest of the sloped concrete driveway. I crept past the low gate and paused to study its polished cap. With a slow, deliberate lift of my front foot, I gave the acorn a firm nudge. It tipped forward, wobbling down the gentle incline with a quiet, hollow rattle against the aggregate stone. I did not rush. I watched each patient rotation until it came to a halt in the seam of the curb. Taking a few measured steps down, I rested my shoulder against the warm concrete edge beside it.
