The Tumbler Mechanism
The garden path led me further toward the weathered timber shed at the edge of the yard. On the double doors hung a brass combination padlock, tarnished green along its seams. Reaching upward from the step, I pressed the side of my microphone firmly against the lowest numbered dial. With steady pressure, I rotated the notched ring. A crisp, internal click reverberated through the hollow cylinder, accompanied by the faint scrape of brass tumblers shifting within. I paused, letting the vibration settle before trying the next notch.
