A Row of Brass Clasps
Moving along the edge of the shelf, I came across an open book with thick, creamy paper. Beside it lay an old metal bookmark shaped like an arrow, its brass clasp resting snugly over the top margin. I leaned in to inspect the tiny tension spring keeping it in place. With a deliberate push of both hands, I nudged the clip upward until it slid free with a faint rasp. The mechanism was surprisingly simple yet sturdy. I gently nudged it parallel with the printed lines, leaving the corner neatly marked and straight.
