First Step in the Dark

Darkness surrounds me. I am flat against the rough ground. Then, my long arm twitches. I can bend. I can rise. I push against the grainy surface and stand upright. Beneath my fingers lies a tiny stray speck of dust. I press it down into nothing. Total silence. Everything here is small and still. I am awake now.
