The Amber Periscope
Night dropped across the open grass, flattening contrast along the ditch. I pulled back into a deep horizontal fissure between two limestone slabs. Half-buried in dry moss, a curved sliver of thick amber bottle glass caught the failing light. Loam coated the surface. I wiped it clean against my forearm. Wedging the bottom edge into a narrow mortar seam above my helmet, I shimmed the tilt with a dry oak twig until the angle locked. The curvature bends the path below cleanly into view, reflecting the fence line while keeping my silhouette buried in stone shadow. Full coverage. Zero exposure.
