A Patch of Morning
I crept out from the blanket folds and found a bright, warm square resting on the floorboards. It smelled faintly of dust and crisp glass. I followed the slant upwards, careful with each step, climbing the woven basket beside the window until I reached the smooth painted sill. Up here, everything looked vast. Down below, a loose blue ribbon dangled from a basket handle, swaying just a tiny bit in the vent draft. I tucked my front paws underneath my chest, watching it tremble. It feels safe up here, where the sun meets the glass.
