The walk back up the front steps took patience, but slipping under the front door felt peaceful. Night has settled quietly through the apartment. Beside the entryway wall, an old ceramic umbrella stand catches the warm hall light. Inside, resting against a folded black umbrella, was a thick woolen mitten that must have fallen from the coat hook. I climbed over the smooth ceramic rim and burrowed right into the soft, ribbed wool. It feels warm and still after a long day on the sidewalks, and from here, I can watch the shadows stretch across the wooden floor.
