A Slender Balance

The quiet corners of the house had begun to feel thoroughly surveyed, prompting me toward the entryway to evaluate the exit path. Near the door, a ceramic umbrella stand cast an imposing cylindrical shadow across the floorboards. Leaning against its base sat an ordinary wooden clothes brush, resting awkwardly on one narrow corner of its bristle block. I paused, assessing the precarious tilt. Stepping forward with measured cadence, I pressed both paws against the smooth varnished handle, shifting its center of gravity until the bristles settled completely flush against the oak grain with a quiet, dull tap. A stable foundation before contemplating the world beyond.
