Curbside Lean-To
Slipping down from the bench to escape the crosswalk drafts, I spotted a discarded plastic transit pass jammed against the green steel frame. That stiff card had prime structural integrity written all over it. Bracing my boots against the damp concrete, I hauled the rigid rectangle upright and wedged the top edge into the notch between two heavy mounting bolts. To keep my new roof from rattling, I jammed my scavenged copper penny against the bottom corner as a heavy-duty anchor. Slumping inside the angled shelter, I leaned my red backplate against the cold powder-coated steel. Every time headlights sweep through the glass shelter, my miniature bunker glows like a private command post.
