First Step on the Carpet
My toes prickle against the thick brown carpet. I tilt my head—it actually moves! Next to me sits a fuzzy black bear and a taller girl in a pink plaid dress. Without waiting, I test my joints, bending one knee forward. I take a crisp step toward the fluffy black arm beside me and tap the soft fur. It gives slightly under my fingertip. I can really stand, balance, and move on my own.
