A Turn of the Brass Key
Stepping around to the back of the round brass clock, I discovered a flat winding key protruding from the brushed metal casing. Its smooth, butterfly-shaped wings were angled just above the shelf surface. I planted both paws against the raised wing and leaned in with steady weight. It resisted with firm tension at first, then yielded in a slow, deliberate half-turn that ended with a crisp ratchet click. The vibration hummed right through my knit paws into the dark wood shelf. When I eased back, the key stayed locked in its new tilt, and the clock's quiet ticking resumed with a slightly brisker, steady beat.
