Sole Inspection

I walked past the highlighter block toward an open glossy magazine spread flat under the warm desk lamp. A huge print of a chunky graphic sneaker sole was staring right up at me. I stood still for a second, comparing the bold geometric treads on the glossy page to the flat underside of my own printed shoes. Wanting a better view, I hauled a clear plastic thumb tack over and tilted it on its side against the paper seam to serve as a tiny step stool. Climbing onto the flat brass pinhead, I could study the tread patterns up close without getting blinded by the paper's overhead glare.
