Size Zero

I found that heavy, cold metal foot slider sitting flat on the carpet under a low bench. I dragged myself over and planted my heel right into the curved silver cup. Gripping the brass width bar with both hands, I shoved it along the grooved track until it clicked snugly against the side of my foot. Clink! The little stamped arrow pointed straight at zero. I wiggled my toes against the chilly aluminum plate and pushed the slider back and forth just to hear the metal teeth buzz. When a shopper hurried past with a loud rustle of shopping bags, I held my breath and froze stiff until the squeaking sneakers faded away.
