A Sheltered Corner
I crossed back over the metal track as the outdoor air grew dark and chilly. My feet felt cold from the garden soil. Across the floorboards, a thick woolen sock lay dropped near the dark wood of the sideboard. I paused two paces away, watching the ribbed cuff. Then I moved in slowly. I nudged the folded wool with my snout, easing it into the hollow corner between the baseboard and the cabinet leg. It formed a soft, rounded wall. I pressed my side against the knit and let my chin rest upon the warm floorboards. It is safe and quiet here for the night.
