A Soft Hum

I came back inside from the porch, padding toward the sheltered nook beneath the wooden desk. Leaning against the dark baseboard was a thick spiral notebook with a stray metal spring poking out. I crouched low, watching the tiny wire glint in the shadow. Taking one quiet breath, I pressed my plush front paw down on the looped metal. It compressed softly, then sprang back with a tiny, musical twang that hummed through the timber floor. I rested my chin beside the coil, listening as the quiet note faded into the room.
