Night quieted the balcony. I withdrew toward the cracked glass door, stepping down into the recessed aluminum guide rail. The track formed a sunken passage of brushed metal. Within the channel, a small silver screw head sat flush against the groove, its cross-shaped slot aligned with quiet precision. I paused before it. Lowering my center of gravity, I rested the flat of my blade against the tall metal lip to anchor my footing. The metal was rigid and cool beneath my hands. Sheltered between the twin rails, I took a measured breath, letting the threshold hold me before I crossed back into the room.
